It’s the complexity of human relationships and the impact of daily life with everyday objects that animates the realization of these design objects and installations by artist Michael Beitz.
Feelings and concepts turn into design works made with great craftmanship: folded tables, knotted sofa become distorted constructions with their own functionality subverted. They stretch, interweave, contort to symbolize playfully and ironically the complexity of human relationships and the connection with everyday objects that surround us. And so the design object becomes a space of alienation and isolation and its functionality as a place of social interaction is questioned.
‘I was concerned with the central ideas of emotional tension, distance, and the inability to communicate when making not now. I have always been interested in psychosomatic relationships and I see this work as an extension of the connection between emotional and physical behaviors.’
